Why I Built This Feeder

As a chicken flock grows, daily feeding can become one of the most repetitive chores. Small feeders work fine for a few hens, but larger flocks can empty them quickly, waste feed, or require refilling more often than you would like.

This project uses a plastic barrel and gravity feeder ports to create a larger feeder that can be adapted to different flock sizes. The same basic idea works with a 5-gallon bucket, a 20- or 30-gallon barrel, or a full 55-gallon drum.

I currently use a similar setup with 50-gallon barrels. I do not usually fill mine completely. Instead, I normally add one 50-pound bag of feed at a time to help keep feed fresher and reduce the chance of moisture problems.
